Is a bad wheel bearing always noisy?

Most of the time, a wheel bearing will chirp, squeal or make some other noise to indicate that it's going bad. This isn't always the case, though. In some cases, wheel bearings give no indication that they are wearing out which can have devastating consequences if it fails at high speeds. Wheel bearings can usually be expected to last at least 150,000 miles, but they should still be checked for roughness or looseness every time the brakes are serviced.
