What Type of Lubrication is Used for Wheel Bearings?

Bearing grease is specifically designed for high-friction surfaces and is of a different grade and consistency compared to lubricants used in other parts of your vehicle. According to Machinery Lubrication, most wheel bearings used in passenger cars and trucks are lubricated with National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) Grade 2 multipurpose grease. However, checking with your bearing manufacturer is the ideal way to select the appropriate petroleum-based or synthetic lubricant to protect your vehicle. Friction can destroy bearings and other vehicle components, making effective lubrication key for extending a bearings’ useful life.
